Doesn’t time fly when you are working to a deadline? On Monday I will release my first album for 11 years. There’s still a load of work to do. I’ve done little in the way of promotion and the physical CDs are still being born in a factory as I type (should have had them by now!) It’s mainly down to money. It costs a pretty penny to do this and I haven’t had as much time on my hands as I would have liked. However album day is nigh and you may now go and buy it! The best and quickest way to obtain a copy is to get it from the Meiosis store on this website here. Or if you are that way inclined just go to your favourite MP3 internet store on Monday and get a copy there – they have loads in stock! Literally millions of copies for you all!
There is a vinyl version on its way and this is the reason I recorded the album in the first place. I wanted to be very old-fashioned about it. I think this may still be a couple of months off and because of that I’ll probably add something else to it (making it limited edition and special). Just what I’m not so sure!
So here we go… Meiosis – Where Reality Ends and I Begin will be out on Monday! – That sentence is the top and bottom of all the promotion I am doing! I’d like to do more but it looks like we’re using the drip drip approach now. I might do a small gig soon to celebrate. Watch this space carefully as I probably won’t be promoting that either!
Maybe I’m only bitter because I don’t have a brother to argue with to constantly keep me in the music news and promote my new album. Please, please I beg of you… if you see a story on the internet about anybody by the name of Gallagher – don’t click on it. News outlets gauge reaction to this shit by how many hits a certain page gets. If it gets loads of hits they are going to run more of this shit!
Normally I don’t bother, but last week I was stupid enough to click on and read yet another stupid Gallagher story. It read that Noel Gallagher (of Oasis fame) felt cheated by the current coalition government. He felt cheated because nobody had voted for this and therefore he felt there should have been another election. He then went on to say that he voted for a ‘pirate’ in the election because he didn’t know who to vote for and was kind of forced by his wife to vote: “there was a man dressed as a pirate at the bottom of the voting slip, so I just voted for him”.
I would say that Noel Gallagher (of Oasis fame) has no mandate to voice his discontent with the way the last general election panned out if he voted for a pirate. Would he be more content with government policy if a pirate was in charge? No, Noel Gallagher (of Oasis fame), you probably wouldn’t.
It has also occurred to me that Noel Gallagher (of Oasis fame) is probably just saying stupid random things in order to get in the news to promote his new album. He has, in the past, struck me as the more sensible one out of he and his brother, Liam Gallagher (also of Oasis fame), and he probably knows he ignites the flames of attention from bloggers and idiots on The Twitters like myself who will get annoyed and spread his name like muck.
Well Noel Gallagher (of Oasis fame) and Liam Gallagher (also of Oasis fame), it’d be nice if you both reformed yourselves into an Oasis tribute band as soon as possible so the rest of us don’t have to read, listen to and put up with your stupid dribbling rivalry for much longer. You both have proven you can make shite music on your own as well as together – so let’s just keep it in the one place so the rest of us can avoid you being planks. Alternatively, single out your talents as either a great singer with a great voice that a lot of people really like and a songwriter that knows what he’s doing and come up with something progressive and interesting like you did in 1994?
In other news… I have been a little concerned about two great comedians having (what seems to be) a one-sided debate on The Twitters. I must admit that this time last week I did not realise the connotations of using the word ‘mong’. I thought of it as a pretty inoffensive word that means ‘ugly’. It’s not a word I would normally use anyway so it never particularly bothered me in my day-to-day life. Normally, using the direct phase “you are fucking ugly” to offend rather than dressing it up by using the word ‘mong’ has worked well for me. However, Ricky Gervais appeared on Twitter last week and had so far been a great addition to that great world. I found his funny faces and silly comments really brightened up my day.
Until I noticed that the word ‘mong’ was causing offence to others. I thought to myself ‘why?’ Then I discovered that it is actually a derogatory term for ‘someone with Down’s Syndrome’ and that Mr Gervais’(of The Office and Hollywood fame) use of the word was actually causing offence to disabled people. From that moment I realised that I became a bit uncomfortable with the word. I had to actually delete a retweet I did of one of Mr Gervais’ (of The Office and Hollywood fame) funny videos because he had used the term.
Then (now bear in mind I have been out of the loop for a few days), I discovered today Mr Richard Herring (of Fist of Fun and generally being an underrated genius fame) had taken Mr Gervais (of the Office and Hollywood fame) to task on this matter.
Both of these great comedians have their own blog pages. Both have a reasonably high platform on which to stand. Richard Herring (of Fist of Fun and generally being an underrated genius fame) appears to have put a good argument forward to Ricky Gervais (of The Office and Hollywood fame). All Mr Gervais has said in his defence so far is that “the word ‘mong’ does not mean DS anymore than the word ‘gay’ means happy anymore”.
Well thanks… now you’ve dragged me into it! If someone used the word ‘gay’ as happy – I wouldn’t be offended would I? I wouldn’t be offended if you use the word ‘faggot’ or ‘bum boy’ as happy. It should be a great debate to be had – the one of language and how we use it, who we unintentionally offend and how we don’t think about what we are saying. Ricky Gervais (of The Office and Hollywood fame) is just is not engaging. I hope he does soon – because I‘m sure there is more to him than this. I remember when I used to think Jim Davidson was rather good on ‘Big Break’. How we learn.
So… is Ricky Gervais (of The Office and Hollywood fame) just doing what Noel Gallagher (of Oasis fame) is doing to promote his new product? Probably not. I just think he hasn’t engaged with the general public for a while and hopefully he will come back down to earth soon.
I seem to hear any long-term readers calling out loudly that I purposely called the general public ‘idiots’ and that I hated them all a little while back. Yes… don’t worry I still do. But if lots of them had kicked up a fuss I’d either argue my side or back down and apologise. I also, last week, actively encouraged Simon Cowell (of dickhead fame) to seek libel damages against me. It’s cost me a fortune in court but worth it for just another platform to call him a cunt.
So can I be accused of pulling the same trick? Me, Martin ‘Meiosis’ Thompson (of no famed address)? No. I stand up for what I believe in and publicity makes me vomit (unless it sells albums/tickets!)
Stop Martin Thompson feeling stressed – buy some tickets to see “David Bowie” at World Headquarters in Newcastle here.
And/Or but really ‘AND’ buy the new Meiosis album, Where Reality Ends and I Begin here.
